Located in Takato, Nagano Prefecture, this two-household home was designed for four people, acouple and an elderly couple. The village, situatedalong an old Edo-period highway, was once a busy highway post town. These days, while it is becoming increasingly depopulated, with many houses left vacant, the village also has couples who move here from the cities and enjoy a life ofself-sufficiency. The residence is designed for alifestyle of close interaction with the world outside, with a mud-wall storeroom to hold vegetable sharvested from the work in the fields each day, anarea to dry washing on the deck on the western side of the house, and a place for communication with neighbors.
