This residence was designed for a space createdby disassembling one span of a steel-frame,single-storey warehouse. The entrance is narrow inaccordance with the shape of the site, but thespace widens as one moves further into thebuilding. To the west of the site is an open areawith a river where strong winds blow unobstructed. The residence is prone to becoming a windpassage. We wanted to make sure that it wouldhave a view while also shielding it from thewestern sun. It also needed for the snow to fall offthe roof naturally. Our aim was to realize theresidence with a simple composition that took intoaccount such natural conditions unique to the siteand the locality. While the second floor has abedroom with views of the Tateyama MountainRange, only one section of the building is two-storey, in line with the client’s request that allother living areas be restricted to the first floor.More than just creating a simple void, the single-sheet pitched roof serves to create a space with avisual sense of ascent or elevation.
