This project involved the reconstruction of a priest’s quarters. Clearing the site and building fromscratch certainly would have meant greaterfreedom of design. However, what we attemptedinstead was to design in a way that would carry onthe memory belonging to the site, together with thememories belonging to existing buildings and thepriest’s followers themselves. We also wanted adesign that would draw out potential. The meeting and living areas were positioned tosurround a pond that used to be in the backyard soas to become the central focus of daily life. We alsopositioned the general entrance and the priest'sceremonial entrance so as to work around a largegingko tree, so that it would always be in view forvisitors. We re-used the arched beam, curvedwindows, and bars and posts from the alcove sothat they would create points of familiarity for thefollowers.
